Store Manager Arrested for Selling Government Drugs

Police in Busoga North has confirmed the arrest of Godfrey Kiiza, the in charge of medical supplies store at Nankandulo health center IV, in Kamuli district over illegal sell of government drugs meant for this facility.

He is suspected repacking and selling largely anti-malarial drugs, HIV/AIDs drugs and test kits. It is alleged that, Kiiza who was in-charge of the drug supplies store would repack the government drugs in other packaging before reselling them to unsuspecting members of the general public.

His arrest resulted from intelligence led investigations by officials from the State house health monitoring unit-HMU, following complaints from members of the general public.

The officer in charge of HMU in eastern Uganda, Mpaata Owa’gage says that, their inquiries revealed how the amount of drugs were not tallying with the recipients.Mpaata says that, this lack of accountability for the drugs recieved and dispensed at the facility raises a red flag on possibility of theft.

Mpaata further says that, Kiiza was falsifying drug stock-outs before his supervisors, as a means easily selling drugs without their notice. Kiiza has since apologized and consented to have committed the crime.

On this, Mpaata however, says that there are ongoing audits to ascertain the extent of loss accrued from Kiiza’s behavior.  He adds that the matter has been handed over to police authorities for further investigations and preferable prosecutions.

Meanwhile, the Busoga North police spokesperson, Michael Kasadha says that, they have opened a general inquiry file to quicken prosecution processes. Kasadha adds that, efforts of documenting evidence against the suspect are underway, with detectives intensifying search for his accomplices.
