Two suspects accused of murdering Gulu University student John Bosco Ngire have been committed to the High Court for trial by the Gulu Magistrate’s Court.
The suspects, Gerald Omara, alias Torach, 18, a student, and Ambrose Rom, alias Genge, 18, a mechanic, appeared before Grade One Magistrate Miriam Amoro on Tuesday afternoon for the mention of their case.
They face two counts of murder and robbery over the killing, which allegedly occurred on October 10, 2026, at Agwee Cell along Tegot Road in Laroo-Pece Division, Gulu City.
According to the charge sheet filed at Gulu Central Police Station, the suspects allegedly committed the offences alongside other individuals who remain at large. The group is accused of being armed with a hammer when they allegedly robbed Ngire of a black Samsung mobile phone valued at Shillings 700,000 and a pair of black jungle boots worth Shillings 100,000.
The stolen items were valued at a combined Shillings 800,000.
The suspects did not take a plea because the magistrate’s court lacks jurisdiction to try capital offences. Magistrate Amoro subsequently committed them to the High Court for trial.
The prosecution was absent when the matter came up for mention on Tuesday. The suspects, who are currently on remand at Gulu Main Prison, are expected to appear before the High Court on Wednesday morning.
Their case comes amid growing concerns among Gulu University management and student leaders over what they describe as recurring attacks on students and university staff.
Ngire’s murder occurred about five months after Christopher Nyeko, a laboratory technician at the university, was killed by unknown assailants a short distance from the institution’s main campus.
The university’s communications officer said on Tuesday that the institution had not received any updates on investigations into Nyeko’s killing since the incident.
The two killings have heightened concerns about the safety of students and staff, with university leaders calling for stronger security measures to prevent further attacks.
Following an emergency security meeting last week, security officials in Gulu City pledged to strengthen security within and around the university premises to protect students, staff and other members of the community.
