The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has suspended Frank Gashumba pending an investigation into his conduct and statements concerning Balokole and Pentecostal churches.
In a letter dated October 19, 2026, and signed by the organisation’s National Vice Chairman, Michael Kaguta Toyota Nuwagira, the PLU said its management had received numerous concerns over allegations that Gashumba had attacked the religious communities.
The letter, titled “Immediate Suspension from the Patriotic League of Uganda,” said the organisation had resolved to investigate the allegations through its internal disciplinary procedures.
“Numerous concerns have been brought to the attention of the management of the Patriotic League of Uganda regarding your conduct and statements concerning the Balokole and Pentecostal churches, particularly allegations of attacks against these religious communities,” the letter reads.
The organisation said the concerns required formal scrutiny, adding that political leadership must be exercised responsibly and with respect for the rights and freedoms of all citizens, regardless of their religious affiliation.
The PLU cited constitutional protections for freedom of worship, religious expression and peaceful assembly, noting that religious institutions play an important role in promoting moral values, social harmony, peace and community well-being.
Nuwagira said he had requested a formal investigation into the allegations as part of the disciplinary process. Gashumba was advised to cooperate with the relevant authorities and comply with any interim administrative measures communicated to him.
The suspension will remain in place pending the outcome of the investigation and the applicable internal procedures, according to the letter.
The organisation also emphasised the importance of upholding its core principles and values, despite appreciating the contributions of its staff, patriotic officers and cadres.
“I trust that this time away shall provide you some clarity, corrective action and alignment,” Nuwagira wrote.
Copies of the letter were sent to the PLU General Secretary, the Vice Chairman for the Central Region and the Deputy Director of Mobilisation.
The suspension follows public controversy surrounding Gashumba’s remarks about Pentecostal church leaders. He has previously attracted attention for challenging some prominent pastors over claims of performing miracles and the authenticity of their religious influence.
The PLU letter, however, does not specify the individual statements that prompted the complaints or indicate when the investigation will be completed.
It was also not immediately clear whether Gashumba had responded to the suspension.
The development places the spotlight on the balance between freedom of expression, public criticism of religious leaders and the responsibility of political organisations to uphold their stated values while addressing complaints against their members.
