Police in Mt Moroto Region have arrested an ambulance driver following a fatal road accident in which a pregnant woman was knocked dead along the Moroto-Soroti highway in Napak District.

The accident occurred at about 7:35pm on October 12, 2026, at Kasile Village in Iriiri Sub-county.

Preliminary police reports indicate that a white Toyota Land Cruiser ambulance attached to Toroma County in Katakwi District was travelling towards Moroto when it allegedly knocked a pregnant woman walking alongside the highway. The woman died at the scene.

Residents identified the deceased as Achilla, a resident of Go Down Village in Iriiri Sub-county.

Mt Moroto Regional Police spokesperson Mike Longole confirmed the incident, saying officers had visited the scene and commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Police impounded the ambulance, registration number UG 7844M, and arrested the driver, identified as Julius Aleper, to assist with the investigations.

Longole said investigators documented the scene, recorded coordinates and prepared a sketch plan as part of the evidence-gathering process.

He added that preliminary findings pointed to reckless driving as the suspected cause of the accident.

“The vehicle is parked at the police yard pending IOV inspection. The body of the deceased has been conveyed to Iriiri Health Centre IV for postmortem,” Longole said.

Police extended their condolences to the bereaved family and urged motorists to avoid speeding and comply with traffic regulations to prevent road crashes.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
