President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has paid tribute to the late Perezi Tenywa Bukhumune, the former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda, describing him as a patriot whose contribution was instrumental in stabilizing Uganda’s economy during the country’s post-1986 recovery.
The President’s condolence message was delivered on Saturday by the Minister for the Presidency and Woman Member of Parliament for Budiope West, Milly Babalanda, during Bukhumune’s burial in Ibulanku Sub County, Bugweri District.
Babalanda said President Museveni was deeply saddened by the former central bank official’s passing and extended his condolences to the bereaved family, friends and the nation.
“On behalf of the government and himself, the President conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family of the late, friends and all Ugandans,” Babalanda said while reading the President’s message.
In the message, President Museveni said Bukhumune was among the team of dedicated professionals at the Bank of Uganda who supported the National Resistance Movement government’s economic reform agenda following its assumption of power in 1986.
According to the President, the reforms laid the foundation for restoring macroeconomic stability by controlling inflation, rebuilding the country’s productive capacity, rehabilitating key economic and social infrastructure, and maintaining fiscal discipline.
He commended the late Bukhumune for his patriotic service and significant contribution to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation during his tenure as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda and in other public service roles.
The President also prayed for the deceased’s soul to rest in eternal peace and expressed solidarity with the family during the period of mourning.
Addressing mourners, Babalanda called on residents of Busoga and Ugandans across the country to embrace government wealth creation initiatives as a way of increasing household incomes and reducing poverty.
She noted that poverty remains one of the biggest challenges facing the Busoga sub region and urged communities to take advantage of government programmes designed to improve livelihoods.
Babalanda also paid tribute to Bukhumune for his lifelong service to the country, saying his contribution to Uganda’s economic transformation would be remembered.
The burial ceremony was attended by government officials, family members, friends and mourners from different parts of the country, who gathered to pay their final respects to the former central bank deputy governor.
