Police in Moroto District are hunting for a trailer driver attached to Yaobai Cement Factory who allegedly struck and killed a police constable before fleeing the scene along the Moroto–Soroti highway.
According to Mt. Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson Mike Longole, the incident happened on Tuesday, 30 June 2026, at about 3:30pm near Yaobai Cement Factory in Nadunget Sub-county.
The deceased, Police Constable Isaac Ogira, attached to the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) at Moroto Zonal Headquarters, was riding a Yamaha YBR motorcycle registration number UP 8113. He was reportedly travelling from the ASTU barracks in Nadunget heading towards Moroto town when the crash occurred.
Police say the collision happened when a trailer was emerging from the factory premises and joining the main road, directly into the path of the officer’s motorcycle.
The truck, described as a white CHACKMAN trailer bearing registration number UA 783EZ, is said to have been driven by an unidentified person who immediately left the scene after the impact and has not yet been traced.
Longole confirmed that Constable Ogira died on the spot due to severe injuries sustained in the crash. Preliminary findings point to careless driving on the part of the trailer driver.
Traffic police and investigators responded to the scene, after which the body was transported to Moroto Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination. Both the motorcycle and the trailer were later impounded and taken to Moroto Central Police Station as inquiries continue.
Police have appealed to members of the public with any information about the whereabouts of the suspected driver of vehicle UA 783EZ to report to the nearest police station or Moroto CPS to assist ongoing investigations.
Authorities also urged motorists to observe road safety regulations, especially when entering or joining major roads, to help prevent similar fatal accidents.
