Property worth millions of shillings has been destroyed after a fire broke out and gutted a boys’ dormitory at Butogota Trinity College in Butogota Town Council, Kanungu District.
The incident occurred on Monday night at around 9:00 p.m., when flames are said to have rapidly spread through the dormitory while students were attending evening preps, according to eyewitnesses and school officials.
The school headteacher, Wense Muhweezi, confirmed the incident, saying students were in class at the time the fire started and only noticed the blaze after it had already intensified. He said students immediately raised an alarm, but efforts to save property inside the dormitory were unsuccessful.
“All students were in evening prep when the fire started. They saw flames spreading and alerted the school administration,” Muhweezi said.
The fire destroyed all student belongings inside the dormitory, including mattresses, blankets, bedsheets, clothes, books, and beds.
Muhweezi added that no injuries were reported since all learners were away from the dormitory during the outbreak of the fire. He said the school quickly notified police, who registered the case at Butogota Police Station under SD 03/09/06/2026.
He further revealed that a student identified as John Elisha has been arrested on suspicion of arson and is currently being held at Butogota Police Station to assist with investigations.
The headteacher called for calm among students and parents, saying the school administration is working closely with security agencies to establish the exact cause of the fire and restore normal operations.
Police had not yet issued an official statement regarding the suspected arson by the time of filing this report.
