Museveni Launches Construction of Kidepo International Airport

President Yoweri Museveni officially breaks ground for the construction of Kidepo International Airport in Karenga District, marking the start of works on the major infrastructure project aimed at boosting tourism and development in the Karamoja sub-region.

President Yoweri Museveni has officially launched the construction of Kidepo International Airport in Karenga District, a project expected to transform tourism and economic activity in the Karamoja sub-region.

The ground-breaking ceremony, held on Friday, marked the beginning of works on the airport that will be located near Kidepo Valley National Park, one of Uganda’s leading wildlife tourism destinations.

Speaking at the event, Museveni said the project reflects the progress Karamoja has made after years of insecurity and cattle rustling that once hindered development in the region.

He noted that improved peace and stability had opened the door for major investments, including the airport project.

“The airport will improve access to Kidepo Valley National Park, boost tourism, attract investors, create jobs for young people, and expand markets for local products,” Museveni said.

According to the President, more than 1,600 Ugandans have already secured employment on the project.

The development follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Government of Uganda and the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry from the United Arab Emirates.

The airport is being constructed in Lomej, approximately three kilometres from the park headquarters, and is expected to significantly ease travel to the remote tourism destination known for its rich wildlife, including lions, giraffes, buffaloes, and cheetahs.

Uganda Civil Aviation Authority Deputy Director General Olive Birungi Lumonya said all technical, environmental, and regulatory studies for the project had been completed before construction commenced.

She explained that the selected site was approved after extensive consultations involving the Uganda Wildlife Authority, Karenga District leadership, and the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce.

Lumonya said the airport has been designed as a Code 4E international facility, with room for future expansion to Code 4F standards.

The planned infrastructure includes a 3,000-metre runway capable of handling large international aircraft such as the Boeing 777, Boeing 747, Airbus A330, and Airbus A340.

Sharjah Chamber of Commerce Chairperson Abdallah Sultan Al Owais revealed that preparatory works, including the construction of more than 12 kilometres of access roads, were already underway.

He said feasibility and environmental studies for the project took close to three years because planners had to ensure the development would not negatively affect wildlife conservation around the national park.

Karamoja Affairs Minister designate John Baptist Lokii described the airport as a major milestone that will unlock the region’s tourism and investment potential.

He noted that despite the global reputation of Kidepo Valley National Park, the area has historically attracted fewer visitors due to poor accessibility.

Lokii also disclosed plans to upgrade Nadunget Airstrip in Moroto District into a full airport as part of broader efforts to strengthen air transport infrastructure in Karamoja.

Meanwhile, Karenga District Woman MP and State Minister for Ethics Rose Lily Akello called on government to improve road infrastructure in the region, particularly the Karenga–Kitgum road, to support ongoing construction activities and future economic growth.
