Museveni Promises Transport Upgrades for Kyotera Border Communities

Museveni arriving at Kyotera

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has announced new commitments to upgrade transport infrastructure in Kyotera District, promising the construction of a key access road and a bridge intended to boost movement, trade, and economic activity in Uganda’s southern border communities.

Speaking to supporters during a campaign rally at St. James Playground in Kasaali Town Council on Friday, December 19, 2025, the President revealed plans to build the Kyapa–Kasensero Road.

The road will link the Kyotera–Mutukula Highway to the Kasensero landing site, a move he said will significantly improve connectivity for residents and traders.

Museveni noted that poor transport links have long hindered access to markets, health facilities, and other essential services in the area. He said the new road will lower transport costs, ease the movement of goods and people, and open up economic opportunities for fishing and border communities.

The President also announced that government will construct a bridge connecting the Kasensero mainland to Nangoma Island, which lies along the Uganda–Tanzania border across the Kagera River. At present, island residents rely entirely on water transport, often facing delays and safety risks.

According to Museveni, government engineers had earlier considered introducing a ferry service, but technical evaluations ruled out the option due to unfavorable water conditions, leading to the decision to construct a permanent bridge.

“The people living on the islands, including teachers and health workers, struggle to move easily, and this has affected service delivery. A bridge will provide a lasting solution and support development,” Museveni said.

He pointed to successful road construction projects implemented in areas such as Ssembabule District and along the Masaka–Bukakata route, arguing that similar infrastructure investments can transform Kyotera’s economy.

Museveni emphasized that reliable transport infrastructure is essential for integrating rural and border regions into the national economy and accelerating development.

In addition to infrastructure development, the President urged residents to benefit from government livelihood programmes, particularly the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga, which he said are designed to strengthen household incomes.

He stressed that community transformation begins at the household level, urging locals to actively engage in the programmes to improve their economic wellbeing.

President Museveni’s campaign activities continue on Saturday, December 20, 2025, with planned rallies in Kalangala and Kalungu districts, as he seeks another term in office ahead of the January 15, 2026 presidential election, where he faces seven challengers.
