Edward Ssebufu, commonly known as Eddie Mutwe, the Head of Security for National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), was on Monday remanded to Masaka Central Prison after being charged with six counts at Masaka High Court.

According to a charge sheet accessed by this website, which was amended to include Eddie Mutwe, he was added to a case originally filed in February 2025 against three other NUP members.

The new charge sheet, dated May 5th, 2025, and sanctioned by Detective Superintendent of Police Caroline Mukyala, lists one count of aggravated robbery, four counts of simple robbery, and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, all contrary to the Penal Code Act Cap 128.

Eddie Mutwe is jointly charged with Achileo Kivumbi, a 42-year-old businessman and driver from Nansana East II B Zone in Nansana Municipality; Robert Mugumya, a 31-year-old businessman from Nakuwadde Zone in Wakiso District; and Grace Wakabi alias Smart, a 36-year-old driver also residing in Nansana Municipality.

Prosecution alleges that on May 18th, 2024, at Manja village in Lwengo District, Kivumbi, Mugumya, Wakabi, Eddie Mutwe, and others still at large robbed journalist Margaret Kayondo of a green sweater and a Camon 12 mobile phone valued at 730,000 shillings.

It is alleged that weapons such as short knives and sticks were used to threaten her during or immediately after the robbery.

In the charges of simple robbery, the prosecution claims the same group robbed Drake Lubega of a Tecno Spark 8 phone and a jumper worth 400,000 shillings and used actual violence against him.

Another victim, Rodgers Murungi, was allegedly robbed of a Tecno Spark 2.0 phone worth 470,000 shillings, 200,000 shillings in cash, and a National Identity Card—items totaling 870,000 shillings in value.

John Mukalazi was reportedly robbed of 200,000 shillings, while Haruna Ssekito was said to have been robbed of a Tecno Smart Pop 7 phone valued at 320,000 shillings.

Additionally, it is alleged that Kivumbi, Kimera Ibrahim, Eddie Mutwe, and others assaulted journalist Zainab Namusaazi, causing her actual bodily harm.

Eddie Mutwe was reportedly abducted by security operatives in Mukono District on April 27, 2025, and held incommunicado for several days.

His detention was only acknowledged last week by the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who admitted Mutwe had been confined in his basement.

Muhoozi controversially stated that Mutwe was “learning Runyankole,” his native language, during his captivity, and that his signature beard had been shaved off.

Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) Chairperson Mariam Wangadya later ordered Gen Muhoozi to release Mutwe, citing violations of his legal rights.

However, Muhoozi defied the directive and instead presented a visibly weak Mutwe before court.

Masaka Grade One Magistrate Abudallah Kayiza remanded Eddie Mutwe after he was charged with offences that are only bailable by the High Court.

He will remain in custody at Masaka Central Prison until May 25th, 2025.

The arrests stem from incidents that occurred at the burial of businessman Pascal Ssekasamba in Manja village, Kisekka sub-county, Lwengo District.

The event reportedly turned chaotic due to scuffles between rival factions of the NUP party.
