The Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) has launched a medical camp in Luwero District as part of the activities leading up to the Tarehe Sita celebrations.
Tarehe Sita, which means the “sixth day of the month” in Kiswahili, commemorates the National Resistance Army’s (NRA) daring attack on Kabamba barracks.
This year’s national celebrations, the 44th, are set for Thursday, February 6, 2025, in Kyotera District under the theme: “Celebrating Pan-Africanism in Solidarity and People’s Sacrifice in the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy for Socio-Economic Transformation.”
The medical camp, located at Luwero Hospital along the Kampala-Gulu highway in Luwero Town Council, offers a range of services, including safe male circumcision and blood donation.
Many men have expressed interest in the circumcision services. John Kibirige from Kasiiso village stated, “I plan to undergo the procedure, having heard that it can significantly reduce the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS.”
Beyond medical services, the UPDF has also engaged in garbage collection and disposal efforts.
They have cleaned various locations, including Luwero Hospital, Kasana Central Market, Luwero Central Market, Kiwoko Road Junction, Balikyejusa roadside, and Balikyewunya Junction, as well as other streets in Luwero Town Council.
They have also cleared trenches to improve drainage. The exercise is being conducted in partnership with the area police force, the prison service, and the leadership of Luwero Town Council.
According to Sam Twiineamazima, the Savannah Regional Police publicist, “UPDF medics have also been joined by 15 colleagues at Luwero Hospital.”
Organizers say activities will continue throughout the Greater Luwero region until February 6, culminating in regional celebrations in Nakasongola District.
At the launch, Luwero Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Richard Bwabye commended the UPDF for their people-centered initiatives.
Luwero District LC V chairman Erasto Kibirango expressed gratitude to the participants for their successful cleaning efforts, noting their role in promoting hygiene in the community.
Brig. Gen. Charles Byanyima, Commander of the UPDF Motorized Infantry Division, reminded officers of Luwero’s historical connection to the UPDF and urged local political leaders to inform their constituents about the government’s contributions to the community.
