Uganda has released Shs130.4 billion to accelerate the construction and completion of eight training facilities ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), in a move that underscores the government’s commitment to delivering a successful tournament.

Speaking in Kampala, Dr. Dennis Mujimba, Chairperson of the Communications and Signage Sub-Committee of the AFCON 2027 Local Organising Committee (LOC), said the funding removes any justification for delays.

He noted that works are set to begin immediately at key sites, including Hoima Boma, Masindi Municipal, Lira, and Gulu, with the Uganda People’s Defence Forces expected to take over and commence construction before the end of April.

Mujimba also revealed that upgrades to FUFA Kadiba Stadium, part of the Mandela National Stadium cluster, will begin in July once the facility is handed over by the federation.

The developments come as a delegation from the Confederation of African Football arrives in Uganda for a two-day preparatory workshop involving co-host nations Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda under the “Pamoja” arrangement.

Scheduled for April 22–23 in Kampala, the meeting will focus on key operational areas such as security, infrastructure, finance, media, ticketing, and commercial strategy.

Mujimba emphasized that the visit is not an inspection exercise, but rather a collaborative platform aimed at aligning planning and delivery priorities among the host countries.

Beyond infrastructure, the LOC highlighted significant business opportunities linked to the tournament, particularly in accommodation and construction.

With an estimated 500,000 visitors expected, property owners have been urged to seek certification through the Uganda Tourism Board to qualify as official accommodation providers.

“We are in the right window for investors and proprietors to prepare,” Mujimba said, noting that bookings for major tournaments typically begin six to twelve months in advance.

He further reassured the public that key facilities, including Akii-Bua Stadium, remain on track. He added that investments in training venues, particularly those located within universities in Lira and Gulu, will leave a lasting legacy for sports development and talent nurturing.

The LOC, chaired by First Lady Janet Museveni, is also working through an intersectoral framework to streamline access to opportunities and eliminate bottlenecks for businesses seeking to participate in AFCON-related activities.

With funding secured, construction set to roll out, and regional coordination gathering pace, Uganda says it remains firmly on course to co-host a successful AFCON 2027 tournament.
