Tooro Leaders Put Differences Aside, Call For Unity As Kingdom Mourns King Oyo

FORT PORTAL — The Babiito Clan Head in Tooro, Musuga Charles Kamurasi, and Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomire have made a public show of unity, calling on Tooro subjects to remain peaceful and united as the Kingdom mourns the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

The two leaders appeared together on Sunday at the Karuzika Royal Palace, where the late King is lying in state ahead of his final burial rites, known as Kutabaza, scheduled for September 12, 2026.

Kamurasi urged Tooro subjects to preserve the legacy handed down by their ancestors and work together for the common good of the Kingdom.

The joint appearance was particularly significant because it was the first time Kamurasi had publicly appeared alongside Rwomire since the death of the King, potentially signalling an easing of tensions between the two Kingdom leaders.

Kamurasi and other clan leaders had previously criticised Rwomire over his handling of information concerning the King’s illness and death.

Kamurasi had also accused the Prime Minister of overstepping his mandate when he announced the identity of the King’s heir, arguing that such communication did not fall within the Prime Minister’s responsibilities.

However, during Sunday’s gathering, Kamurasi struck a conciliatory tone, calling for calm among mourners and urging Tooro subjects to maintain unity as the Kingdom completes the King’s final rites.

He also thanked President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for what he described as his continued leadership and support for Tooro during the Kingdom’s period of mourning.

Kamurasi praised the President’s kindness and humanity, saying the Kingdom would remain grateful for the support extended to it during the difficult period.

The public show of unity comes as Tooro enters the final stages of mourning for King Oyo, who died last week after reigning for more than three decades.

The late Omukama is currently lying in state at the Karuzika Royal Palace, where Kingdom subjects have been allowed to pay their last respects between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

His final burial rites, known as Kutabaza, are scheduled for September 12, 2026.
