Police are investigating a suspected suicide by shooting in Wandegeya, one of the busy neighbourhoods in Kampala. The victim has been identified as Rogers Atuhaire, an employee of SGA Security Company.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning and is being thoroughly examined to determine the cause of death and uncover any contributing factors.

Atuhaire’s death has sparked concerns about mental health and gun safety issues and prompted a thorough examination of the prevailing circumstances surrounding gun crimes in the country.

Forensic teams reached the scene to collect evidence, while detectives are conducting interviews with individuals closely connected to the victim and the security company.

Authorities are also examining Atuhaire’s personal background to gain deeper insights into his mental state and possible motivations.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy spokesperson of the Kampala Metropolitan Police, states that according to initial reports, the deceased was found by David Okudu, a day guard who had just arrived for duty.

Atuhaire was discovered lying in a pool of blood with a visible bullet wound on his throat, which had penetrated through his head.

According to Owoyesigyire, witness statements have been taken, and relevant evidence has been collected. Furthermore, six individuals have been detained for questioning to aid in the ongoing investigation,” he stated.

Owoyesigyire assures that a thorough and unbiased investigation will be conducted to determine the details surrounding this tragic incident. As the investigation unfolds, additional updates will be provided.

Other Crimes

The incident becomes one of the four major gun crimes that have rocked the country this month with five people dead.

Early this month (on May 2, 2023) Col (rtd) Charles Okello Engola, the State Minister for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations, was shot by his bodyguard identified as Pte. Wilson Sabiiti. Sabiiti fled the scene and shot himself dead in one of the barbershops around Kyanja Ring Road trading centre.

On May 6, 2023, an unknown gunman shot and killed a prominent social media blogger/Vlogger Ibrahim Lubega Tusibira commonly known as Isma Olaxess/Jjaja Ichuli on his way back home in Kyanja.

On May 12, 2023, Indian Businessman, Police Constable- Ivan Wabwire shot and killed Uttam Bhandari Saremal, the Director of TFS Financial Services. The incident happened at around 10am at Raja Chambers, along Parliament Avenue. Wabwire was arraigned in court and remanded.
