Pictorial: Nude Corruption Protestors Arrested in Kampala

The Police in Kampala have arrested three women for staging a nude protest against corruption in Uganda.

The protestors have been identified as Praise Aloikin, a Law student at Makerere University, Norah Tshetshe, and Kemitoma Siperia Mollie, a former Guild leader.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Area Police, the trio is currently being held at Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala on charges of common nuisance.

Uganda’s Human Rights Activists Arrested Protesting Trial of Civilians in Military Court

They are expected to be brought before the courts of law soon to face justice.

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon as the protestors approached the Parliament of Uganda.

Two of the women were wearing only knickers, exposing their breasts, which were painted in Uganda’s national colors—black, yellow, and red—along with a touch of blue.

The colors were painted horizontally across their bodies, and one of the protestors had the inscription “Kiteezi was preventable” on her back, with another message reading “Anita Must Resign” on her thighs.

The protestors carried placards with messages such as “Uganda is not poor, they are stealing its wealth,” and one with a more vulgar message, “Corruption has …me. I am here to moan,” alongside another that read, “Say no to Corruption, for the Children.”

Eron Kiiza, the lawyer representing the protestors, stated that they are demanding justice for their clients and are working to secure their release.

This protest follows a similar demonstration last month, where hundreds were arrested for demanding the resignation of Speaker Anita Annet Among, whom they accused of corruption.

The recent protest comes three weeks after more than 30 people lost their lives after the Kiteezi landfill, burst and buried them.

Many are still missing, and efforts to retrieve their bodies are ongoing. Kiiza mentioned that his clients believe the government failed to prevent the disaster at Kiteezi, despite warnings from experts, leading to the tragic loss of lives.

This is not the first nude protest in Uganda. Previously, a group of elderly women in Northern Uganda protested similarly following another incident involving government negligence.
