Alice Nnanungi, the former Masaka City Council Building Review Committee Chairperson is in trouble for her alleged involvement in corruption tendencies.
Nnanungi is wanted by the Police to answer criminal charges of; impersonation, forgery, obtaining money by false pretense, and causing financial loss to the government.
Majerani Luboyera, the Nyendo-Mukungwe Division Town Clerk, reported her to the police following an internal audit that revealed widespread corruption in the City Building Review Committee office.
Nnannungi, the female City Councillor representing the Nyendo-Mukungwe division, was sworn in as the first Chairperson of the City Building Review Committee in 2023.
The committee is responsible for guiding proper urban infrastructure development and issuing occupational permits for buildings.
She ascended to the Building Review Committee office primarily in her capacity as Secretary for the Works and Technical Planning sectoral committee.
However, Luboyera indicates that the internal audit has revealed that her operations were riddled with grave corruption scandals she got involved in for self-aggrandizement, hence causing huge losses to the city council and the developers.
She is accused of extorting money from developers in the pretext of approving their building plans, before issuing forged receipts to people who pay the statutory fees.
Luboyera indicates that although the Council had in April last year passed a vote of no confidence against due to similar reports of corruption, she continued to secretly reach out to different developers and extort them of huge sums of money.
According to him, his office has received numerous reports from whistleblowers and complaints from victims, which prompted him to sanction a special audit of the operations of the building review committee.
He indicates the auditors summoned Nnannungi to respond to the complaints but she remains indifferent, which has prompted him to engage police to take on the matter for eventual prosecution.
Luboyera explains that the audit indicates that Nnanungi has been operating with a clique of both political and technical staff in the Physical Planning department, to falsify structural development plans, hence disrupting local revenue collection.
According to him, the city has been suffering recurrent local revenue collection shortfalls despite registering growth in revenue sources.
Besides Nnanungi, he reveals that he is going to hand in the audit findings to the Police to broaden the investigations into the corruption syndicates in the city.
Twaha Kasirye, the Greater Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson confirms that they registered complaints against Nnanungi, who is however yet to respond to police summons that invited her to record statements.
He says she has now been given up until Thursday to report to the police or else, she will pursued and arrested.
Her known phone lines remain switched off. Notably, the audit comes at a time when Nnanungi and former Masaka City Council Speaker Tonny Ssempijja are in Masaka Chief Magistrates Court facing charges of forging council minutes and impersonation; in suits initiated by the City Council.
