The National Unity Platform (NUP) in Mukono District has launched a grassroots fundraising campaign aimed at sustaining party activities and boosting financial independence.
Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze, speaking during the drive at the party’s district offices, said the initiative draws on a model widely used in established democracies where members directly finance party work.
“This fundraising will help us run our activities without relying on sources that compromise our independence,” Nambooze said. “With this, Museveni will not see Kyagulanyi in IPOD.”
Nambooze also criticized what she described as the government’s heavy reliance on taxation without creating new economic opportunities.
“Time is coming when people will be taxed for being alive in Uganda. Fishermen are already treated like criminals on the lake, and soon every vendor will need a registered company to sell matooke,” she warned.
NUP fundraising committee chairperson Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga said the campaign targets contributions starting from Shs1,000, with each donor receiving an official receipt.
Those contributing Shs100,000 or more are issued certificates signed by the party president.

“We are not forcing anyone to give. Giving is voluntary, and what matters is the spirit in which it is given,” Balimwezo emphasized.
The campaign has already drawn significant support. Mukono Municipal Mayor Elisa Mukasa Nkoyoyo contributed Shs500,000, Nambooze’s husband Bakireke donated Shs5 million, and district women MP flag aspirant Amaniyo Draville gave Shs10 million—split across constituencies, grassroots mobilizers, and district activities.
Draville, who recently joined NUP, said she was at home in the party and urged members to focus on strengthening its structures.
“I wish well for Mukono, so it should wish well for me as well,” she said.
Party leaders say the drive will continue across Mukono and beyond, aiming to grow both the financial capacity and operational reach of NUP ahead of future political engagements.
