Police in Kibaale District are holding a man accused of brutally killing his wife over a Shillings 100,000 loan she reportedly obtained without his consent.
The suspect, Andrew Ndyayambegye, a resident of Kanoga-Kitooma village in Matale sub-county, is alleged to have attacked his wife, Beatrace Kaitesi, 47, after accusing her of securing the money from a local village savings group in his name.
According to preliminary police findings, Ndyayambegye allegedly struck Kaitesi multiple times on the head and face with a hand hoe, inflicting deep wounds.
She was initially rushed to a nearby clinic but her condition deteriorated, prompting a referral to Mubende Hospital. She died before arrival.
Following the attack, Ndyayambegye fled the scene and went into hiding.
Mathias Sunday, the LC1 chairperson of the area, said residents mounted a manhunt and arrested the suspect on Monday while he was hiding in a nearby bush. He was handed over to police.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest and detention at Kibaale Central Police Station.
He said murder charges have been preferred against Ndyayambegye and that once investigations are complete, he will be produced in court.
The incident has shocked residents, with local leaders warning against domestic violence and urging community members to seek peaceful ways of resolving disputes.
