The Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court has remanded a fifth suspect in connection with the 2015 murder of former Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Joan Namazzi Kagezi.

Ssemujju Abdulnoor, also known as Minana, a former Special Police Constable attached to the Flying Squad Unit, was initially arrested in 2017 over the same case but was later released.

His re-arrest last Thursday followed renewed investigations into the high-profile killing. He was apprehended from his home in Nakyesa Village, Galilaya Sub-county, Kayunga District.

On Tuesday, Minana was brought before the Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court to be formally charged. However, he appeared in poor physical condition and was unable to walk, prompting three police officers to carry him into the courtroom.

While in the dock, Minana repeatedly called on former Inspector General of Police, Gen. Kale Kayihura, to come to his aid. He appeared frail, unable to stand or sit upright, and requested food before the proceedings could continue.

Grade One Magistrate Daphine Ayabare granted his request, allowing him to be served katogo (a local dish) and soda.

Before the murder charges could be read, Minana claimed he had been assaulted, saying his limbs were injured, leaving him unable to walk. He also cited persistent hunger and general ill health.

In response, the court session was temporarily suspended until 2:30 PM to allow his complaints to be addressed.

However, State Attorney Richard Birivumbuka told the court that the suspect was feigning illness in an attempt to delay the proceedings.

Minana now joins four other suspects in the case, including Nixon Agasirwe, the former commandant of the Special Investigations Unit, who has already been committed to the International Crimes Division of the High Court to stand trial.

Magistrate Ayabare ordered Luzira Prison authorities to conduct a medical examination on Minana. He and Agasirwe are expected to reappear in court on July 8, 2025, as investigations continue.

The other suspects already committed to trial include John Kibuuka, John Masajjagge, and Nasur Abudallah Mugonole.

They face charges of terrorism and murder in connection with Kagezi’s killing, which occurred on March 30, 2015.
