Kampala-Uganda

In a remarkable display of achievements, the Police Canine Unit, has successfully implemented the deployment of Police Dogs across all districts and regions over the past five months.

According to Uganda Police spokesperson- Fred Enanga, this success story is a testament to the unwavering dedication and hard work of the Commandant Canine Unit, the dog handlers, the training team, and the breeding team based in Nagalama.

The Police Dogs, according to Enanga, have proven to be invaluable in various aspects of law enforcement, including general-purpose duties as well as specialized tasks such as cash detection, explosives detection, and narcotics detection.

One crucial point to emphasise is that the services provided by these Police Dogs are entirely free of charge. The achievements attained thus far are greatly owed to the public’s cooperation in preserving crime scenes.

“By maintaining the integrity of these scenes, the dogs can effectively track scents and trace the direction of suspects, ultimately leading to more successful apprehensions,” he noted.

From January to May 2023, he says, the police recorded an impressive total of 8,563 tracking cases, resulting in the apprehension of 6,843 individuals.

These apprehensions consisted of 5,686 males, 717 females, 352 male juveniles, and 88 female juveniles. Furthermore, the Police Dogs aided in the recovery of 2,883 exhibits, and a total of 2,463 suspects were presented in court within the past five months.

In the realm of narcotics and explosive detection, Police Dogs played a vital role. The Canine Unit responded to 45 calls regarding abandoned items and suspicious objects at the aviation police in Entebbe.

Additionally, Enanga noted, they received 67 calls to sweep suspicious flights and promptly responded to 1,054 cases involving suspicious cargo during the same five-month period.

At the Aviation Police headquarters, 36 canine sweeps were conducted, while Nsambya Headquarters received 181 requests for assistance.

“We extend the sincerest gratitude to the diligent force of dog handlers and the incredible Police Dogs for their exceptional contributions in achieving such remarkable success in their respective areas of expertise,” he states.

According to Enanga, their unwavering dedication and expertise have undoubtedly made a significant impact on law enforcement and public safety throughout the nation.
