Former Mukono District Speaker Betty Hope Nakasi has been remanded to Luzira Prison after being charged with corruption before the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala.
Nakasi appeared before the court on Friday, October 2, 2026, following investigations by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Prosecution alleges that on June 30, 2025, at the Mukono District Local Government headquarters, Nakasi, together with other suspects who are still at large, solicited Shs2 million from the then Procurement Officer of Buikwe District.
According to the allegations, Nakasi claimed that she could use her influence over the Mukono District Service Commission to help the officer secure a promotion to the position of Senior Procurement Officer at Mukono District Local Government in exchange for the money.
The prosecution alleges that the transaction was part of a broader scheme involving the purported sale of government jobs and influence over recruitment and promotion processes within local governments.
Nakasi’s arrest followed investigations into complaints of extortion allegedly involving some members of the Mukono District Service Commission and politicians in the district.
The investigations are being conducted against the backdrop of government efforts to crack down on the alleged sale of public jobs, following repeated warnings by President Yoweri Museveni against the practice and directives to relevant authorities to investigate and prosecute those involved.
Nakasi was remanded until October 21, 2026, when she is expected to return to court for further proceedings.
The allegations against Nakasi remain unproven unless and until she is convicted.
