Electoral Commission Accepts Court Ruling, Will Not Appeal Nalukoola’s Election Nullification

Justice Byabakama

The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially announced January 15, 2026, as the polling day for Uganda’s Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government elections, marking the climax of the country’s 2026 general election calendar.

The announcement was made by Justice Simon Byabakama, the EC Chairperson, during a press briefing held at the Commission headquarters in Kampala.

Justice Byabakama explained that campaigns for all elective positions will officially close on January 13, 2026, allowing a 48-hour rest period for both candidates and voters to prepare for polling day.

He commended all presidential candidates and their supporters for what he described as “peaceful and orderly campaigns” since the nomination exercise that began on September 29, 2025.

“We appreciate the spirit of maturity and discipline demonstrated so far by candidates and their supporters. The process has been smooth, and we urge all participants to maintain this conduct until the end,” said Justice Byabakama.

According to the EC roadmap, campaigns for Parliamentary and Local Government candidates will commence on November 10, 2025, and will run until January 13, 2026.

Returning officers across the country are expected to meet all duly nominated candidates between October 24 and 27, 2025, to harmonize campaign schedules and ensure fairness in the use of campaign venues.

The January 15 vote will mark the culmination of months of political activity as Ugandans head to the polls to choose their next leaders at all levels of governance.
