A drunken police officer in Kabwe, Zambia is in trouble for releasing 13 suspects to enjoy New Year’s celebrations.
Titus Phiri, a well-known officer with a reputation for hard work, and occasional hard drinking, had taken his revelry a little too far that night.
He stunned his colleagues when he forcefully seized the keys to the holding cells and set thirteen suspects free.
Officials say staggering officer declared that everyone deserved to celebrate the new year before unlocking the cells and allowing the inmates to flee.
Well, amid the confusion, the officer himself disappeared into the night, leaving behind a trail of questions for local authorities scrambling to restore order.
His colleague on duty watched in stunned silence as the drunken officer demanded the keys to the holding cells.
“Phiri forcibly grabbed the keys, shouting, “Let them all enjoy the New Year, too!,” said the other officer.
Amid the commotion, Phiri dropped the keys and staggered out into the darkness, leaving his colleague scrambling to call for backup.
It is said that by the time reinforcements arrived, Phiri was nowhere to be found, and the newly freed suspects had vanished into the New Year celebrations.
The next morning, a police spokesperson addressed the incident, confirming that Phiri had indeed fled after releasing the inmates.
“We are conducting a full investigation,” the spokesperson said, “and efforts are underway to locate both the officer and the suspects.”
Meanwhile, rumors spread quickly through the town, some laughed at the absurdity of it all, while others worried about what it said about those sworn to uphold the law.
As for Phiri, his fate remained unknown, but one thing was certain, this was a New Year’s celebration that the Kabwe community and the country would not forget anytime soon.
