The National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) is struggling with understaffing in critical areas of research.
Kasim Sadik, the Deputy Director General of NARO, while speaking at the Agribusiness Expo at the National Crop Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI) in Namulonge, expressed concern over the lack of experts in various agricultural disciplines, particularly those needed to address climate change.
Sadik cited an example of the inadequate number of entomologists, agronomists, pathologists, among others, who are critically needed in the wake of climate change and population growth. He called for the filling of the entire staffing structure.
According to Sadik, NARO is grappling with a staff gap of about 400 people out of the 1,180 required positions; only 760 are currently filled, which he says is insufficient.
Sadik also expressed the need for a state-of-the-art gene bank to preserve both improved and indigenous varieties of livestock, as well as beneficial microorganisms used in scientific research.
He added that such a facility would support the Uganda Climate-Smart Agricultural Transformation Project across research institutes in the country.
Frank Tumwebaze, the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries, speaking at the opening of the two-day expo, pledged that the government will continue to support research institutions to ensure a stable food system in Uganda.
On the issue of understaffing, Tumwebaze acknowledged the need to employ more researchers in critical fields and said that his ministry will engage the government to increase NARO’s staffing levels.
He also noted that NARO remains a top priority on the national development agenda.
Tumwebaze advised NaCRRI-Namulonge to mainstream the expo across various research institutes in the country so that the public can appreciate the innovations, research findings, and technologies being developed.
The two-day agribusiness expo attracted more than 80 exhibitors, including innovators, researchers, and other stakeholders.
The expo also aimed to foster wealth creation, resilience, and sustainable agribusiness innovations.
