Concern continues to grow over the health of veteran politician and retired military officer Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, who is receiving treatment at Nakasero Hospital after being admitted earlier this week.
The 87-year-old former Second Deputy Prime Minister has remained under medical care at the Kampala-based private hospital, although neither his family nor medical officials have disclosed the nature of his illness.
On Friday, members of Gen. Ali’s family held a private meeting at the hospital. Relatives, including some who travelled from abroad, were seen arriving at the facility during the day.
Among those present was the Minister of State for Works, Ali Siraj, who is Gen. Ali’s son. When asked by journalists for an update on his father’s condition after the family meeting, Siraj declined to comment.
One of Gen. Ali’s daughters, who had travelled from Sudan, later said her father’s condition was “not good” but did not provide further details.
Government has confirmed that the veteran statesman remains under treatment. While addressing journalists at the Government Media Centre on Friday, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Justine Kasule Lumumba, said Gen. Ali was receiving medical care but did not reveal the nature of his illness or provide details about his condition.
The absence of an official medical update has fuelled public concern, with many Ugandans expressing anxiety on social media over the health of one of the country’s longest-serving political leaders.
Gen. Ali has been a prominent figure in Uganda’s political and military affairs for more than five decades. Born on April 5, 1939, he served in senior military and government positions during the Idi Amin administration before leading the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF) insurgency in the early 1980s.
Following a peace agreement with President Yoweri Museveni’s government in 1986, he and his fighters were integrated into the National Resistance Army, where he was commissioned as a Major General.
Over the years, Gen. Ali served in several senior Cabinet positions, including Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Third Deputy Prime Minister, First Deputy Prime Minister, and Second Deputy Prime Minister, a position he held from 2021 until the end of the previous Cabinet’s term in 2026.
Although he was not reappointed to Cabinet after the 2026 General Elections, he retained his seat as the Member of Parliament for Adjumani West Constituency, extending a parliamentary career spanning several decades.
