The general cleanliness at the Luzira prison complex has been made more difficult following disconnection from the national water grid.
This website has learned that the prison complex was disconnected from the water grid on August 13th, 2024, by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) due to outstanding water bill arrears of Shs. 18,272,450,274.
Frank Baine Mayanja, the service spokesperson says the disconnection occurred despite the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development (MoFPED) releasing shillings of 2,355,351,000 in the first quarter of FY 2024/25, which is part of the budgeted 7,996,253,000 that has already been remitted to NWSC.
He however reveals that the Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) is currently utilizing water bowsers to mitigate the water crisis.
“Meanwhile, negotiations are ongoing between the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Uganda Prisons Service, and National Water and Sewerage Corporation to restore the water situation to normal.” A statement he released reads in parts.
Baine called upon the affected prisoners and staff to remain calm as long-term solutions are being sought.
