Rasto Kasigwa, the Parish Chief of Nyakabingo in Buseruka Sub-county, Hoima District, has been arrested and is currently held at Hoima Central Police Station.
He is accused of taking Ugx3 million from a person seeking a job.
Kasigwa’s arrest came after several people complained that he was asking for money in exchange for helping them get jobs with the Hoima District Local Government.
He allegedly claimed that he could connect them to members of the District Service Commission, which is responsible for hiring.
One of the victims, who wanted to stay anonymous, told reporters that Kasigwa promised to help him get a job if he paid Ugx3 million.
When the job didn’t come through, the victim reported the case to Hoima LC5 Chairperson, Uthman Kadir Mugisa.
Mugisa advised the victim to take the matter to the police, and Kasigwa was arrested.
Mugisa has warned the public to be cautious and report anyone trying to charge money for government jobs, emphasizing that government positions are not for sale.
He also mentioned that his office is investigating other government workers involved in similar activities.
Julius Hakiza, the spokesperson for the Albertine Region Police, confirmed Kasigwa’s arrest and said he is facing charges of extortion and abuse of office.
This case comes shortly after another incident in July, where Kikuube LCV Vice Chairperson, Vincent Alpha Opio, was arrested for taking Ugx1.5 million from a job seeker.
