The territorial Police in Kampala Metropolitan North and Nansana Division recently discovered a human trafficking ring that had been operating under the guise of a training centre.

The suspects, Rashida Namubiru and Hakim Ramathan, were arrested for their alleged involvement in the trafficking of 131 vulnerable individuals who were lured with promises of a better future in the Middle East.

The entire operation came to light when the police received a tip-off from vigilant community members in Kajjansi. Acting swiftly on the information, a joint task force raided a nondescript home in Nansana, where they found the victims in dire conditions.

The victims, both men and women, had been recruited by different agents and brought together for training in catering and housekeeping, skills that were supposedly in high demand in the Middle East’s job market.

The shocking revelation was that the training centre, known as WORLD GATE, had not been registered or licensed to operate. This clandestine operation was run by Musa Suna, who took advantage of the desperate dreams and aspirations of these vulnerable individuals.

He offered them false hope and opportunities for a better life but instead subjected them to months of exploitation and abuse.

Upon arrival at the training centre, the victims’ identities and personal belongings were confiscated, leaving them completely isolated from the outside world. They were confined within the confines of a fenced home in Nansana, where their movements were tightly controlled.

Only recently, on July 22, 2023, they were transferred to another location, Akright cell, where they were finally rescued from the clutches of their captors, specifically Alex Mary Nantongo.

The eight companies implicated in the recruitment of these victims have been identified as Cornel Recruitment Co, Janulani – Kalerwe, Swift in Wakaliga, Masaba located in Kawempe (Kutano), Trinity Travel Agency located in Nkrumah (Makayi Plaza), Herbrah International located in Bukoto, Wamba Recruitment Agency, and Labaf Solution located in Minister’s Village, Ntinda. These companies played a significant role in facilitating the trafficking of these innocent people, and further investigations will ensure that they face the consequences of their actions.

Human trafficking is a heinous crime that exploits the dreams and vulnerabilities of countless individuals in search of a better life. The pain and trauma experienced by the survivors, as well as the anguish endured by their families, cannot be understated.

The joint security agencies responsible for uncovering and dismantling this trafficking ring are determined to bring all those involved to justice.

Efforts are underway to track down and apprehend the remaining perpetrators still at large, ensuring they face the full force of the law. The police’s intention to hold these criminals accountable sends a clear message that our society will not tolerate human trafficking.

Fred Enanga, the Uganda Police spokesperson, commended vigilant community members whose alertness led to the rescue of these victims.

“Your commitment to the safety and well-being of your fellow citizens is commendable, and it is through collective efforts like these that we can build a safer and more just society,” he says.

According to Enanga, it is essential that we continue to raise awareness about the dangers of human trafficking and support survivors in their journey towards healing and recovery.

“Only by working together can we effectively combat this devastating crime and protect the most vulnerable among us. Let us stand united against human trafficking and make a difference in the lives of those who have suffered unimaginable pain and exploitation,” he emphasises.
