Police in Kampala are investigating a shooting incident involving a female motorist that reportedly occurred near the residence of the Speaker along MacKinnon Road.
The incident, which took place on Thursday, left one person injured, according to the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, who confirmed that inquiries into the matter are still underway.
Police have also indicated that efforts are ongoing to trace and properly identify the victim, with further details yet to be released.
Preliminary information from security sources suggests that the suspect may be a member of the Speaker’s convoy security detail.
It is alleged that the officer opened fire at a woman who was driving a Toyota Harrier after she was accused of failing to give way to an official motorcade.
While authorities have not officially confirmed arrests, insiders within security circles acknowledge that the shooting did occur.
However, questions are being raised informally within some ranks about whether cases involving highly placed officials and their escorts are always subjected to full and transparent investigation.
The latest incident has reignited concern over a pattern of violent confrontations involving armed security personnel on Ugandan roads. Similar cases in recent years have drawn public attention and criticism.
In December 2024, a VIP Protection Unit officer was implicated in the fatal shooting of a mini-truck driver along Sezibwa Road after a dispute over right of way.
In another case in 2022, a UPDF soldier shot a police officer during a confrontation involving a military vehicle recovery.
More recently, in 2023, a police officer was convicted after fatally shooting an Indian national in an incident near Parliament Avenue that was captured on CCTV.
Security analysts have repeatedly pointed to systemic challenges within some armed units, including stress linked to working conditions, limited psychological support, and concerns about discipline and accountability, as possible contributing factors in such incidents.
Investigations into the MacKinnon Road shooting are ongoing.
