Police in Wantoni have arrested a 30-year-old man accused of killing his former girlfriend in a violent rage before allegedly mutilating her body by cutting out her tongue and dumping it in Buikwe District.

The suspect, identified as Ochedde Charles, a resident of Katosi Town Council in Mukono District, was apprehended following a tip-off from a friend who reportedly spotted him in the Wantoni area.

He is accused of murdering 32-year-old Nakyeyune Rachael in October 2024 at Gulama, Buikwe District.

According to police, the two were formerly in a romantic relationship that later turned sour. Investigators say the fatal confrontation occurred after a disagreement in which Nakyeyune allegedly refused to publicly acknowledge Ochedde as her partner. The suspect reportedly became enraged, a moment that escalated into a deadly assault.

In a chilling confession recorded at Wantoni Police Station, Ochedde allegedly admitted to beating Nakyeyune until she died. He is further accused of mutilating the body before fleeing the scene. The victim’s remains were later recovered and taken to hospital, where her death was confirmed.

The arrest followed a coordinated operation after Bogere Musa, the deceased’s former husband, reportedly spotted the suspect in Wantoni and alerted police immediately. Officers led by the area Officer-in-Charge Ngobi Dickson swiftly moved in, resulting in the suspect’s capture. Residents reported hearing gunshots during the operation as police apprehended him.

Ochedde has since been detained at Wantoni Police Station and later transferred to the Central Police Station for further processing as investigations continue.

Family members of the deceased expressed relief following the arrest. Ssenyonjo David, the father of the late Nakyeyune, said the arrest brought a sense of closure after nearly two years of waiting for justice.

“We have been waiting for this day. After he killed our daughter and fled, the case has been under investigation. Today, our hearts are at peace. We thank the police for the good work they have done,” he said.

Bogere Musa described the killing as rooted in unresolved relationship conflict and revealed that the suspect had allegedly been sending him threatening messages while on the run. He urged the justice system to ensure the suspect is held fully accountable.

The deceased’s daughter, Nanteeza Gift, also emotionally recounted the impact of her mother’s death and called for justice for the family.

Residents in Wantoni and surrounding areas praised police for the arrest, saying it has helped restore a sense of security in the community after months of fear linked to the suspect’s alleged actions.

Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that Ochedde will be arraigned in court to face murder charges.

The case has shocked residents of Katosi Town Council and Buikwe District, raising renewed concerns about domestic violence and unresolved relationship disputes turning deadly.

Authorities have urged members of the public to report suspicious individuals and cooperate with security agencies in preventing similar crimes.
