Masaka, Uganda – National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has publicly praised journalist Farish Magembe for his courageous stand against the oppression in the country.

During a visit to Masaka City, where he went to check on his detained bodyguard Edward Ssebuufu, alias Eddie Mutwe, Kyagulanyi took time to acknowledge Magembe’s bravery.

The journalist, who also serves as President of the Greater Masaka Journalists Association (GREMAJA), had recently condemned the harassment of journalists and the destruction of their equipment — actions he described as a direct affront to press freedom.

Magembe’s comments were initially misunderstood by some NUP supporters, who reacted harshly by circulating his photos online and sharing his contact information, encouraging harassment.

Despite the backlash, Magembe stood firm and later clarified his position during an event marking International Journalism Day. His message resonated with many — including Kyagulanyi himself.

Speaking at a press conference held at the NUP headquarters on Tuesday, Kyagulanyi lauded Magembe’s boldness and integrity.

Kyagulanyi also revisited the subject today in Masaka, once again praising Magembe’s commitment to truth and justice.

“I want to thank your leader and all the journalists who have come out to distance themselves from this mess after realizing they were being used. I urge the rest to speak out against brutality and torture. We are not enemies.” Kyagulanyi noted.

At the same event, the NUP leader decried the reported mistreatment of Eddie Mutwe in detention, calling it inhumane and unacceptable.

The incident highlights the growing challenges faced by journalists in Uganda and the importance of principled voices like Magembe’s in defending media freedom and human rights.
