Mukono, Uganda. A fatal accident has claimed the life of a soldier and left two others seriously injured at Mpoma Satellite along the Mukono Kayunga road, police confirm.
The accident involved a Grey Toyota Gaia -Registration Number- UAR 596Q, driven by Abdel Muhassen Kamal, a 35-year-old Egyptian resident of Mukono.
The second vehicle involved was a red Bajaj motorcycle Registration Number-UFG584L, ridden by Lance Corporal Kundo Obedi, a 30-year-old soldier and student at the Military I.T School in Lugazi.
Tragically, Lance Corporal Kundo Obedi lost his life on the spot, while two passengers on the motorcycle sustained severe injuries.
According to preliminary reports, the accident occurred when Lance Corporal Obedi’s motorcycle, carrying two passengers, was allegedly moving at a high speed trying to overtake two vehicles on a slope.
Regrettably, upon completing the overtaking manoeuvre, the motorcycle collided with Kamal‘s oncoming vehicle.
The body of the deceased soldier was swiftly transported to Bombo Military Hospital, while the injured passengers were taken to Kawolo Hospital and Nagalama Hospital for urgent medical attention.
However, the Egyptian national (Kamal) is assisting the police with investigating the circumstances that led to the tragic incident.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Spokesperson, confirmed the incident saying both vehicles involved, have been towed to the Mukono Police yard as investigations continue.
According to Onyango, authorities are examining the accident scene, collecting witness statements, and analysing any available surveillance footage to piece together a comprehensive understanding of the events leading to the fatal crash.
The public has been urged to remain vigilant and adhere to road safety regulations to prevent such heartbreaking incidents.
“We still emphasise the importance of responsible driving and urge motorists to be careful while driving on busy highways,” he said.
