Security Seizes Six Tonnes of Immature Fish from Two Stores

Authorities at the Mpondwe border crossing in Kasese District have seized more than six tonnes of undersized fish as part of an ongoing crackdown on illegal fishing and fish trade.

According to Lt. Moses Atuyambe, the Sector Commander for Kasese under the 115th Battalion, security personnel have been carrying out enforcement operations over the last two weeks targeting traders dealing in prohibited fish products.

During the operation, officers discovered two stores stocked with immature fish and confiscated the entire consignment.

Lt. Atuyambe urged members of the public, particularly beneficiaries of government livelihood programmes and loan schemes such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), to invest in lawful businesses rather than engaging in activities that violate fisheries regulations.

He stressed that security agencies remain committed to enforcing laws governing the fisheries sector and warned that fish harvested or traded illegally would not be allowed onto the market.

The commander advised prospective fish traders to familiarize themselves with the legal requirements governing the business, including the permitted species and minimum fish sizes allowed for trade.

He added that traders who comply with the regulations have nothing to fear, assuring them that enforcement teams are targeting only those involved in illegal practices.

By press time, local leaders in the area had not issued any comments regarding the seizures or the ongoing operations.
