The Rotary Clubs of Lyantonde and Kajjansi have donated medical equipment worth UGX 135 million to Lyantonde General Hospital in a move aimed at enhancing the facility’s capacity to deliver critical healthcare services.
The donated items include a neonatal machine used to care for premature and critically ill new-borns, a modern ultrasound scan, four hand washing taps, and an ultraviolet water treatment unit.
These will support the hospital in addressing some of its most urgent service delivery needs.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Rotary Club of Lyantonde President, Rtn. Dr. Isiah Kizza, emphasized the importance of proper maintenance of the equipment.
“The hospital management should take care of these machines so they serve their intended purpose and complement the existing equipment,” Dr. Kizza said.
Rotary District Governor Peace Taremwa who was the guest of honour emphasized the urgent need to improve maternal and child health, especially through provision of essential medical equipment and training of health workers.
“Today marks our journey into Lyantonde Hospital. We come here to hand over two neonatal incubators, an ultrasound scan, hand-washing stations, and a filtered water system to help our mothers and indeed all of us to drink clean water.” — Peace Taremwa, Rotary District Governor 2022–2023
Lyantonde District Chairperson, Mr. Fred Muhangi, praised the Rotary Clubs for their continued spirit of service and generosity.

“We are very pleased with this donation. You are saving lives, and it’s only God who can reward you. I encourage other organizations to emulate what Rotary is doing,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, Vice Chairperson of Kaliiro Ward, Justine Namuyiga, extended her appreciation to the Rotary Clubs but urged them to consider supporting the hospital’s mortuary, which she noted is under strain due to frequent road accidents that result in unclaimed bodies.
Dr. Fred Katakanya, the hospital’s medical superintendent, welcomed the donation, pledging to ensure the equipment is used effectively to benefit the community.
“We are deeply grateful to the Rotary Clubs of Lyantonde and Kajjansi. This equipment will go a long way in improving the quality of care we provide,” he stated.

A Hospital on the Frontlines
Lyantonde General Hospital, located along the busy Kampala–Masaka–Mbarara highway, is a crucial health facility in the region. Formerly a Health Centre IV, it was elevated to hospital status in 2011 and now serves a large population across Lyantonde and neighbouring districts, including Rakai, Lwengo, Kyotera, and Sembabule.
Its strategic location means it frequently handles accident-related emergencies, especially those resulting from road crashes. The new equipment is expected to significantly boost the hospital’s ability to respond to such emergencies and provide essential neonatal and diagnostic services.
The Rotary donation is seen as a timely intervention and a reminder of the role partnerships can play in strengthening public healthcare systems in Uganda.
