Mukono Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Hajat Fatuma Ndisaba Nabitaka, has praised members of the Greater Mukono House of Zakat for adhering to the teachings of the Holy Koran, particularly the practice of generosity towards the less privileged.
She made the remarks during a function held over the weekend at Masjid Islamiah Nyweddemalwa in Nakifuma County, where she officiated the distribution of cash and material resources collected as part of last year’s zakat contribution.

Zakat, a key tenet of Islam, mandates that Muslims contribute a portion of their earnings to support the underprivileged, helping them access essentials such as medical services and education.
The Greater Mukono House of Zakat’s contribution amounted to Shs 40,830,000, gathered from over 150 Muslims in the region.

In addition to the cash donation, 43 goats, cement, and iron sheets were distributed to beneficiaries for mosque construction, school fees, and to assist individuals facing financial hardships.
In a report, the Secretary for the House of Zakat, Sheikh Sulaiman Luutu, emphasized that any Muslim earning Shs 2.8 million is eligible for zakat payment. He also warned that those who deliberately avoid paying zakat will be compelled to do so.

The Chairman of the Greater Mukono House of Zakat, Haji Umar Ddumba, revealed plans to extend the zakat program across the district, focusing on constructing mosques in areas lacking such facilities. Beneficiaries of the zakat expressed their gratitude, highlighting the positive impact on their lives.

Hamid Kiguli, a resident of Ndwaddemutwu village, noted that the goat he received would serve as essential capital to kickstart his goat- rearing venture. Meanwhile, Mzee Nanseko Hafswa was overjoyed to receive a goat that had recently given birth to two kids, which were also provided to her alongside their mother.
