Venerato Muhumuza, a 58-year-old police officer attached to Kashambya Police Station in Kashambya Sub County, Rukiga District, was further remanded on Monday evening over allegations of raping a suspect.
On January 17, 2022, while on duty at Kashambya Police Station, Muhumuza allegedly raped a 30-year-old female suspect from Nyarubisi village, Kitanga Parish, in the same sub-county.
The suspect, identified as Caroline Kyatuheire, had been arrested for allegedly stealing 1 million Ugandan shillings from a mobile money agent along with a mobile phone.
During the night hours, Muhumuza purportedly opened the police cells, took the female suspect, and brought her to his room where the alleged rape occurred.
Appearing before the court, Muhumuza was charged with rape, contravening sections 123 and 124 of the Penal Code Act.
Juliet Najunju, Kabale Resident District State Attorney, requested an adjournment of the case, stating that witnesses crucial to implicating the accused were not present.
Justice Samuel Emokor, Kabale High Court Judge, subsequently remanded Muhumuza to Ndorwa Government Prison until April 5, 2024.
