Namibia, Africa. Africa is mourning the loss of a distinguished statesman and patriot, Dr. Hage Geingob, who peacefully passed away at the age of 82 on Sunday.

The sad news was confirmed in a statement released by the Acting President of the Republic of Namibia, Dr. Nangolo Mbumba, who expressed the nation’s deep sorrow at the departure of its esteemed leader.

Gov’t Faces Backlash for Demolishing Homes Ahead of Summit

January 16, 2024

The respected patriot passed on a few minutes past midnight at Lady Pohamba Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for an extended period, bravely battling cancer.

His beloved wife, Monica Geingob, and their children surrounded him, providing comfort and support during his final hours.

A stalwart figure in Namibian politics, Geingob made significant contributions to the nation’s development. Serving as Namibia’s third Republican President since March 2015, he had previously held the prestigious position of the country’s first post-independence Prime Minister from 1990 to 2002.

In a remarkable return to leadership, he later served as Prime Minister again from 2012 to 2015 before being elected as the Republican President.

Beyond his political roles, Geingob demonstrated a deep commitment to public service, notably as the Trade and Industry Minister from 2008 to 2012. His dedication to the well-being of the Namibian people earned him widespread respect.

Despite facing health challenges, President Geingob remained active internationally, stating his enduring commitment to regional cooperation. Notable events include attending the inauguration of Republican President Hakainde Hichilema in August 2021 and participating in the COMESA Summit in Lusaka the previous year.

President Geingob is survived by his wife, Monica Geingob, and their three children. Falcon Media and Broadcasting Limited, on behalf of its Management and Staff, extends heartfelt condolences to the Geingob family, the people of Namibia, and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) on the passing of Dr. Geingob.

Tributes have poured in from world leaders, underscoring President Geingob’s impact on the global stage. Presidents Cyril Ramaphosa, William Ruto, and Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed their condolences on social media, highlighting his role as a patriot, a friend, and a staunch advocate for a unified Africa.

Ramaphosa, reflecting on his recent visit in October 2023, recalled the shared commitment to closer partnership and greater opportunities for both nations. He praised President Geingob as a towering veteran of Namibia’s liberation and a close partner in South Africa’s democratic dispensation.

William Ruto acknowledged Geingob’s dedication to a unified Africa, stressing his strong promotion of the continent’s voice and visibility globally. Suluhu referred to Geingob as a dear brother, venerable Pan-Africanist, and a great friend of Tanzania, expressing deep sadness at his passing.

As Namibia mourns the loss of a distinguished servant of the people, Acting President Nangolo Mbumba announced that presidential and parliamentary elections, already scheduled for November this year, will carry the weight of honouring President Geingob’s legacy as the nation moves forward.

The visionary leader may be gone, but his impact on Namibia and Africa as a whole will be felt for generations to come. May his soul rest in peace.

Why It’s Important To Groom Others For Leadership

Dr. Hage Geingob’s passing whispers the critical importance of Pan-African leaders actively engaging in the grooming and mentorship of the next generation of leaders.

His tenure as Namibia’s President, from 2015 until his passing, underscores the significance of leadership transition and the need for a continuous and well-planned succession strategy.

The wisdom gained over decades of service is a valuable asset that Pan-African leaders possess, and passing on this knowledge ensures a seamless transition, preventing a leadership void and fostering stability within the nation.

Dr. Geingob’s legacy extends beyond his accomplishments, emphasising the need for leaders to recognise their role as agents of change during their tenure and as architects of a sustainable future by nurturing the leaders who will carry the torch forward.

In a continent rich with diverse cultures and histories, the practice of grooming the next generation of leaders is vital for the continued development and prosperity of African nations.

Leaders who embrace the responsibility of mentorship contribute to the growth of a cadre of skilled and visionary individuals prepared to address the unique challenges and opportunities that each country faces.

Actively engaging in mentorship enables Pan-African leaders to lay the foundation for a dynamic and adaptive leadership landscape.

This approach not only ensures a smooth transfer of power but also promotes a culture of collective leadership, where the success of the nation is not tied to the longevity of a single leader but rather to the strength of a well-prepared and capable cohort.

Dr. Geingob’s legacy can inspire a paradigm shift, encouraging leaders across the continent to view mentorship as a cornerstone of their leadership legacy, fostering a legacy that transcends generations.

United Africa

The death of a respected leader like Geingob sends a poignant message to Africa, highlighting the urgency and significance of the collective pursuit towards a united and integrated continent, often envisioned as a “United Africa.”

Geingob’s legacy as a Pan-Africanist and statesman underscores the idea that unity is not just a lofty aspiration but a practical necessity for the progress and prosperity of the entire continent.

In his passing, Geingob’s commitment to regional cooperation, demonstrated through his active participation in international events and advocacy for a unified Africa, became a rallying cry for leaders and citizens alike.

It reminds us that the vision of a United Africa is not merely a rhetorical concept but a tangible goal that requires collaborative efforts across borders.

Geingob’s contributions to the liberation struggle and his dedication to fostering partnerships echo the sentiment that a united Africa can leverage its collective strengths to overcome challenges and create opportunities for its people.

As African nations mourn the loss of a patriot, there is an inherent call to reevaluate and intensify efforts towards unity. Geingob’s legacy encourages leaders to prioritise regional cooperation, economic integration, and political solidarity.

It becomes a catalyst for citizens to engage in a shared vision of a continent where borders do not divide, but rather, where diversity becomes a source of strength.
