The race for the Local Council I (LCI) chairperson seat in Nsambwe ‘A’ Cell, Mukono Central Division, has taken an unexpected turn after the outgoing chairperson endorsed NTV journalist Daniel Mwesigwa for the position.
The incumbent, who had initially intended to seek another term, changed mind after learning that Mwesigwa had entered the race.
He later joined supporters who accompanied the journalist to his nomination, signalling his support for the new candidate.
Sources close to the outgoing chairperson said he privately acknowledged that Mwesigwa’s entry into the contest had significantly changed the political landscape, making it difficult for him to secure another victory.
Following his nomination, Mwesigwa, a Nation Media Group correspondent based in Mukono District, outlined an agenda focused on strengthening community unity, promoting teamwork within the village leadership committee, mobilising development opportunities and improving residents’ livelihoods.
He pledged to work closely with residents to lobby for services and projects that address the needs of the community while ensuring transparent and accountable leadership.

Among the priorities highlighted by Mwesigwa is the rehabilitation of a damaged drainage channel, which he said has become a major security and safety concern for residents.
According to Mwesigwa, residents previously mobilised funds to repair the drainage channel, but the project was never implemented.
“As a village, we contributed money to rehabilitate the drainage channel, but the funds were allegedly diverted and no accountability was provided. We shall prioritise transparency and ensure community resources are used for their intended purpose,” he said.
The forthcoming LCI elections are expected to attract keen interest across Mukono Municipality as communities elect grassroots leaders who will oversee local governance, mobilise development initiatives and resolve community disputes.
