Yeko Sasira, the longtime bodyguard of Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze, has been nominated to contest as an independent candidate for the position of Mukono District Direct Councilor representing Anthony-Namumira and Nsuube-Kauga.
Sasira’s independent bid comes after he lost the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket.
Speaking shortly after his nomination, Sasira expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s vetting process but maintained his loyalty to its ideals.
“I support the party ideologies but disagreed with the vetting committee decision. I have been in the struggle for over 20 years, and it is common knowledge that I stand above others,” he said.

He now joins several aspirants who, after failing to secure the NUP flag, have entered the race as independents.
Political observers link this wave of independent nominations to the influence of MP Nambooze, who has urged her allies to remain steadfast under the broader “People Power” philosophy.
“If one feels that if they don’t stand NUP shall lose, they should stand on the People Power ticket since People Power is bigger than people in power,” Nambooze told supporters on her WhatsApp forum.
Sasira’s nomination adds to the growing list of independents in Mukono, setting the stage for a tightly contested council race.
