Shock and confusion gripped health workers at Kawempe National Referral Hospital after a woman allegedly disguised as a nurse reportedly conned staff out of their mobile phones in a carefully staged deception.
The incident is said to have unfolded on Saturday when the unidentified woman calmly moved through different wards within the busy hospital, confidently blending in as though she were part of the medical team.
Staff members later described her as composed and convincing, which allowed her to move freely without raising immediate suspicion.
According to accounts from nurses on duty, the woman approached at least three different health workers separately, each time repeating a similar urgent request.
She allegedly claimed she needed to make emergency calls to relatives of a patient who had just delivered a baby girl, insisting the family had to be informed immediately.
Believing the situation was genuine and trusting her supposed role, the nurses reportedly handed over their phones one by one.
It was only after she had collected all the devices that the woman is said to have quietly walked out of the ward and vanished into the hospital crowds.
Realisation of the scam came moments later, triggering alarm among staff who immediately began searching for her within the facility, but she had already disappeared without a trace.
Hospital workers say the incident has deepened concerns over rising insecurity and opportunistic theft within the facility, noting that even impostors are now exploiting the trust and urgency that defines hospital environments.
As of now, both hospital management and police are yet to issue an official statement, while security teams continue to review movements within the hospital in an effort to trace the suspect, who is believed to have escaped with three mobile phones. Investigations are ongoing.
