At least 20 people protesting against corruption have been arrested in Kampala.
They include a group of 15 students from Makerere University, who started marching from Nasser Road. However, they were intercepted at at railway grounds.
Another group, of about 6 people who marched along Jinja Road were rounded up near Kitgum House by the military. They were holding placards and chanting, “Anita Among must go, we’re tired of corruption in Uganda!”
One of the protestors, Tomas Bagonza, a lawyer and activist, said they have petitioned the Uganda Human Rights Commission-UHRC to investigate acts of alleged torture of the protesters while in police detention.
“All the unlawful actions of the security organs like police, Military Police, and UPDF who infringed on our rights and freedom as granted by the constitution. We want the Commission to investigate this action.” Bagonza said.
Heightened security presence was visible in Kampala with armored vehicles and personnel patrolling the streets.
The demonstrations aim to draw attention to corruption and demand accountability from public officials. However, in his speech on Saturday President Museveni warned the youth not to protest.
