The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has demolished two buildings under construction in Nakasero, Kampala, citing alleged breaches of building and physical planning regulations.
The first structure was brought down on Thursday around midday along Nakasero Road, near the Kampala Resident District Commissioner’s office, during an enforcement operation involving KCCA officials and police.
According to KCCA officials, the building had allegedly been erected on land reserved for a road, prompting the authority to intervene and halt the development.
Police arrested several people at the construction site and seized equipment that included a crane, concrete mixers and a generator.
The building was reportedly associated with businessman Hamis Kiggundu, although the claim of ownership had not been independently established at the time of reporting.
The enforcement operation was briefly interrupted after a group of men, commonly referred to as kifeesi, reportedly arrived from downtown Kampala and attempted to disrupt the demolition. Police and KCCA enforcement officers intervened, and the group eventually left the area.
KCCA subsequently moved to Kololo Baskerville Street, where a second building under construction was demolished.
The second development was reportedly linked to Chinese nationals, although this information had not been independently verified.
A KCCA official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the two developments were among structures being targeted for allegedly proceeding without approved building plans and the required authorisations from the city authority.
The enforcement action forms part of KCCA’s efforts to improve compliance with building and physical planning requirements and prevent construction on land designated for roads and other public infrastructure.
KCCA spokesperson Daniel Nuwabine said the authority was still collecting information about the operation and would provide an official statement after establishing the details.
The latest demolitions are expected to draw renewed attention to building control in Kampala, particularly developments undertaken without approved plans or on land reserved for public infrastructure.
