A dispute over the family property in Nakanyonyi village, Nakifuma-Naggalama town council, may end in total heartbreak. A bitter storm has brewed, tearing apart the strong ties that once held the family of Paul Kaburamboga close.
This narrative centres on a plot of land that carries not only legal ramifications but also the very core of familial connections.
Trouble started with the demise of Sarah Kaburamboga, the first wife of Paul Kaburamboga, who left behind a legacy of children and a large expanse of family land. In a heartwarming twist, Paul Kaburamboga married Ruth Bugwera, who embraced her role as a stepmother, and solely raised Sarah’s children.
For a time, it seemed like the family was united by love and respect for each other’s roles. However, the tranquillity of the entire household took a sharp turn in a direction none could have anticipated.
Moses Kaddu, James Lubowa, and Ruth Wanyana, the three grandchildren born to Elivaniya Nalubuga, Sarah Kaburamboga’s elder daughter, appeared to have a clear motive driven by financial desperation. Overwhelmed by financial difficulties, they viewed the land as their way out of these troubles.
In 2019, the trio made a fateful decision. They sought out Moses Kariisa, the family property administrator and also their uncle, and proposed a plan that would forever alter their family’s dynamics.
They requested a portion of the ancestral land to be surrendered to them, with the intent to sell it. Kariisa, understanding the gravity of the situation, insisted on family consensus, knowing that such a decision could not be one-sided.
What followed was a series of events that showcased the stark contrast between familial unity and personal gain. The grandchildren turned to the Nakifuma/Naggalama town council land committee court, presenting their claim that the land rightfully belonged to them.
They alleged that the rest of the family members had settled on it illegally. This accusation was a blow to the established order, sowing seeds of doubt and suspicion among the once-harmonious family.
The court’s decision in favour of the grandchildren sent shockwaves through the community. It was an announcement that shattered the carefully woven fabric of the Kaburamboga family history.
However, this decision was soon contested, with Mukono court deeming it a “nullity” and stripping it of any legal standing. The High Court of Mukono even issued a temporary order to halt any developments on the land by a prominent land dealer, Jumah Kayondo, who had dishonestly purchased the disputed property.
Despite the court orders and legal proceedings, Kayondo’s actions spoke of an unyielding determination to control the land. He fenced off not only the disputed portion of land but also properties owned by Kaburamboga’s sons, creating an environment of fear and insecurity.
Kaburamboga’s widow, Ruth Bugwera, found herself stripped of her gardens, her latrine, and her sense of security. She has since remained helpless at 73 years of age.
Reverend John Mayanja Kizito, a respected member of the community, firmly asserted that the land unquestionably belonged to Bugwera. In this struggle, he perceived a reflection of a broader societal problem, a system where power and wealth often appear to be more important than justice and ethics.
As the story continues to unfold, it serves as a sombre reminder of the darker side of human nature. The battle over ancestral land has brought to light the lengths to which some will go for personal gain, even at the expense of family unity and respect for the elderly.
The Kaburamboga family’s saga serves as a cautionary tale, a tale that warns the public of the treacherous path of greed and betrayal that can lead to the dissolution of not just relationships, but the very foundations of a family’s legacy.
Impact Of Eviction On The Elderly
Ultimately, the eviction of an older woman disrupts not only her living situation but also her overall quality of life. It destabilizes her emotional and physical well-being, fragments her social connections, and can even impact her health and financial stability.
Providing support, compassion, and resources to elderly individuals facing eviction is crucial to mitigate these multifaceted challenges and ensure their well-being during this difficult time.
