The Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala has remanded the Chief Administrative Officer of Nwoya District, Jenaphar Nantume Egunyu, to Luzira Maximum Security Prison over allegations of abuse of office.
Nantume was arrested on Monday in Nwoya District by police officers acting on an ongoing investigation by the Inspectorate of Government into suspected corruption-related practices within the district administration.
She was on Tuesday presented before the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala, where Chief Magistrate Peter Fred Lochomin ordered her remand until May 4, 2026, as investigations continue.
Also remanded alongside her was Fred Kalisa, a farmer from Got Okwara Village in Lungulu Sub-county, who is facing related charges linked to the operation of an alleged illegal animal market.
Prosecution alleges that between January 2023 and December 2024, Nantume abused her office by bypassing established procedures and authorising the establishment and continued operation of an unauthorised animal market in Got Okwara Village.
The actions are said to have caused financial and administrative prejudice to Nwoya District Local Government.
Kalisa is accused of running the same illegal market during the same period and is further alleged to have fraudulently obtained about 20.6 million shillings belonging to the district local government.
Both suspects denied all the charges during their court appearance. Their applications for bail were not granted after the court noted gaps in their documentation.
The Inspectorate of Government also clarified that while an earlier group of suspects had been linked to the case, Ronald Wanda, a businessman from Kiyindi in Buikwe District, remains at large. Authorities say efforts are underway to locate and apprehend him as investigations continue.
