Jamilu Mukulu, the suspected commander of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), has appeared before the International Crimes Division of the High Court in Kampala, challenging his extradition from Tanzania.
Mukulu, along with co-accused Muhammed Matovu and Omara Abdullah Mutuka, claims their rights were violated during the extradition process, including allegations of torture.
The suspects were brought to court under heavy security, with officers from Uganda Prisons and the Joint Anti-Terrorism Taskforce (JAT) present.
The judiciary issued strict media guidelines, prohibiting the capture or publication of images, names, or video footage of judges, assessors, or advocates involved in the proceedings.
Dozens of Mukulu’s relatives gathered at the court, with some visibly emotional upon seeing him.
The prosecution alleges that Mukulu and 36 co-accused persons were involved in various crimes, including murder, terrorism, and aggravated robbery.
The charges against Mukulu and his co-accused date back to the 1998 ADF attack on Kichwamba Technical Institute, which killed over 80 students.
They also face charges related to the murder of prominent Muslim clerics and the attack on Bugiri Police Station.
The case will continue to unfold as the court considers the suspects’ challenge to their extradition and the charges against them.
