President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Hon. John Chrysostom Muyingo as the Acting Minister of Education and Sports, temporarily filling the position in the absence of a substantive minister.
According to a statement issued by the Presidential Press Unit (PPU) on Thursday, June 25, 2026, the appointment was made in exercise of the powers vested in the President under Article 99(1) of the Constitution of Uganda and takes immediate effect.
“The President has appointed Hon. John Chrysostom Muyingo as the Acting Minister of Education and Sports in the absence of a substantive Minister,” the statement said.
The Education and Sports docket has for years been headed by First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni, who was recently reappointed to the position.
However, questions about her ability to continue discharging official duties emerged after President Museveni revealed that she suffered a serious health scare three months ago.
In a birthday tribute to his wife on Wednesday as she marked her 78th birthday, President Museveni disclosed that she narrowly survived an attack on her life on March 21, 2026.
“Sitaane (the devil), three months ago, on the 21st of March 2026, launched an attack on the life of Maama. However, Sitaane miscalculated,” Museveni said.
The President noted that March 21 holds special significance for the National Resistance Movement, recalling that it was the day resistance forces defeated a counterattack by former President Idi Amin’s troops at Rugaando, about 12 miles from Mbarara, in 1979.
“God, using good doctors, saved Maama’s life and she is now recovering well,” Museveni added.
Muyingo, who has previously served as State Minister for Higher Education, now assumes responsibility for overseeing the Education and Sports ministry until further notice.
