Sebastian Saturday, a 38-year-old Crime Scene Officer attached to Rubanda Police Station, is currently recovering at Rubare Community Hospital after surviving a brutal machete attack by unknown assailants in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The incident occurred at around 2:00 a.m. at Ihanga Trading Centre in Bubaare Sub- County as Saturday was riding his motorcycle, registration number UFZ 316X, en route from Kabale Town to Rubanda.
He was ambushed by four armed men travelling on two motorcycles, disguised as boda boda riders.
According to preliminary reports, the attackers demanded Saturday hand over his motorcycle and other possessions.
In an attempt to evade the robbers, he diverted to a nearby home in search of help. The criminals, however, pursued him and launched a violent assault, hacking him multiple times on the head, arms, and shoulders.
Locals, alerted by the commotion, began to mobilize, prompting the assailants to flee the scene on their motorcycles.
Saturday was quickly rushed to Rubare Community Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for deep cuts and serious injuries.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway.
He called on the public to cooperate with law enforcement and share any information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the perpetrators.
“This was a targeted and violent attack on a law enforcement officer, and we are treating it with the utmost seriousness. Anyone with information is urged to come forward,” Maate said.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Rubanda community, raising fresh concerns over rising insecurity and attacks on security personnel in the region. No arrests had been made by press time.
