Twelve-year-old suffering with wounds

President Yoweri Museveni has requested the Chief Justice to interest himself in the matter of acid attack mishandled by Nakifuma Grade 1 Magistrates court.

Museveni noted responding to Jackline Nyonyozi, the founder of Twesigameko People’s Rights Initiative, who recently petitioned the first lady on February, 14, 2025, regarding the incident.

ACID ATTACK CASE: Court’s Controversial Bail Decision Sparks Outrage

August 21, 2024

The incident involved Lydia Namugga, a pregnant woman, and her twelve-year-old daughter who were viciously attacked with acid at a quiet village of Kateete in Nakifuma County, Mukono District.

The attack was reportedly done by Prosy Awusi, Namugga’s co-wife, leaving the victims in terrible pain and the whole village in disbelief.

This terrible act sparked outrage, especially after the Nakifuma court in Mukono District decided to grant bail to Prosy Awusi, the main suspect.

After the intervention of the Resident District Commissioner, Fatumah Ndisaba who requested that the Regional State Attorney to review the case file, the suspect was re-arrested.

However, the case remained downgraded from attempted murder to grievous harm.

Museveni in his letter expresses disappointment with the State Attorney’s decision to downgrade the charge against Auma Proscovia from attempted murder to assault and the earlier decision by the Magistrate to release Auma on bail.

“By the copies of this letter, I am informing the Chief Justice about this matter and requesting him to interest himself in the matter. I am also directing Brigadier Henry Isoke to study the actions of the State Attorney and advise on the appropriate action.” Museveni indicated.

He also directed the State House Comptroller to support the victims and also ensure that the young girl is accorded all the necessary support to go back to school.

The suspect Auma has made several attempts to seek for bail, but the new prosecutor handling the matter, Josephine Nanyonga, says the trial magistrate declined to grant her bail after hearing evidence of six people incriminating her.

The magistrate was mainly moved by the victims’ gaping wounds which are still traumatising but also considered the rising cases of child molestation, and concluded that bail was inconsiderate.

Auma recently decided to file another bail application with Mukono high court, but it was again turned down by justice Jackline Mwondha.

Justice Mwondha maintained the earlier court decision and accordingly directed that the suspect be returned to Kauga prison and her file referred back to the original court for finalisation of trial.

Auma had presented sureties including her husband Sunday Mayombwe and her brother Ponsiano Obonyo.
