Fear Grips Mukono Residents As Criminal Gang Targets Women

An unknown criminal gang in Mukono District is causing anxiety among residents due to its escalating violent crimes.

The gang is known for masterminding various offenses, including robbery and sexual assault.

Now, the situation is becoming more tense as the gang has started targeting women, particularly factory workers commuting to the Mbalala industrial area.

The most affected areas include Namawojjolo East, Namawojjolo West, Wanjeyo, Bwefulumya, and nearby villages in Namawojjolo Parish, Nama Sub-county.

It has been revealed that an eucalyptus forest in the Kisenyi area has become a hotspot for these crimes.

The forest, which is located near a main road without a surveillance camera, has remained a dangerous zone despite its proximity to security infrastructure.

Residents claim that any woman passing through the area, whether in the morning or at night, faces a high risk of being ambushed.

Hadijah Nambogo, a local resident, described the gang’s tactics, stating that the attackers disguise themselves as women by wearing skirts and dresses.

“The criminals pretend to be women, making it easier for them to ambush girls along the route,” she said.

The attacks mainly occur on shortcuts, particularly during early morning hours when women are heading to work.

Victims are not only subjected to sexual violence but are also robbed of valuables such as phones, handbags, and money.

The community has accused local leaders of failing to address their concerns, prompting some parents to withdraw their daughters from school due to safety fears.

Factory workers have also urged employers to adjust shift times to minimize exposure to the dangers.

Kazibwe Kuzayima, a resident, highlighted the broader social impact of the crimes, stating that sexual violence has led to family breakdowns.

He linked the surge in crime to an influx of individuals from unknown areas, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty.

Local leaders, including Namawojjolo LC II Chairperson Lwanga Charles and Nama Sub-county Councilor Richard Ssemanda, have condemned the attacks.

“Whoever is caught engaging in such acts will regret it,” warned Lwanga, urging security forces to step up patrols and protect residents.

Nama Sub- County Chairperson John Bosco Isabirye acknowledged the efforts of local leaders but pointed out the shortage of police officers as a key challenge in ensuring security.

Meanwhile, Mukono District Resident District Commissioner Hajjati Fatumah Ndisaba Nabittaka assured the public that authorities had already launched investigations.

“I have alerted the police to begin an investigation into this matter and ensure that all those involved are brought to book,” she said.

However, residents call for swift action to prevent further attacks and restore a sense of safety in the affected villages.
