The Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has remanded Police Constable Griffin Ampamize to Luzira Prison on manslaughter charges.
Ampamiza allegedly discharged a bullet that killed a man at King’s Plaza near Container Village.
Ampamize is attached to Tuba Police Post under Kira Road Police Station.
He appeared before Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi on Tuesday and denied the charges.
Prosecutors allege that on December 18, 2024, while escorting a mobile phone theft suspect into custody, Ampamize encountered resistance from a crowd.
In an attempt to disperse them, he discharged a bullet, fatally striking James Oryek Obora in the chest.
After the charges were read, the court informed Ampamize of his right to apply for bail.
However, he lacked sureties in court and was consequently remanded until February 20, 2025.
The prosecution stated that investigations into the case are complete.
Under the Penal Code Act, a person convicted of manslaughter faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
Buganda Road Court has in recent years handled multiple cases involving police officers accused of serious offenses, including neglect of duty, aggravated human trafficking, and murder.
In 2023, former Police Officer Gilbert Bwana Arinaitwe—infamous for pepper-spraying opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye over 13 years ago—was charged with human trafficking and allegedly forcing his male domestic worker into sexual acts.
The same year, the court remanded former Police Constable Stephen Murombo, who allegedly neglected his firearm, leading to its theft by fellow officer Ivan Wabwire.
Wabwire later used the gun to murder Indian moneylender Uttam Bhandari in Kampala.
Murombo was charged with negligence, while Wabwire faced murder charges and was committed to the High Court for trial.
Arinaitwe was also referred to the International Crimes Division of the High Court to answer to capital offenses.
